Guanaco & Juanito

Wildlife Conservation Society & CABI, Bolivia 2002. Text: Erika Cuéllar & Isabel Combes.

The Chacoan guanaco is a member of the camel family and is closely related to the llama. Unlike the llama however, the guanaco is a wild animal and Bolivia's most endangered large mammal.

For more than a decade, Bolivian conservation biologist Erika Cuéllar, winner of the 2007 Whitley Awards, Laureate of the 2012 Rolex Awards for Enterprise, and National Geographic Emerging Explorer 2013, has worked alongside parabiologists (local community members, often hunters, who are trained as field biologists) to successfully keep the species from extinction.

This cartoon leaflet, distributed to local community schools, is just one of many educational materials produced along the way. Click to see the pages.
