Championing climate action in the Global South

by | Oct 7, 2021

I recently had the pleasure of chatting to Derval Barzey, host of The Climate Conscious Podcast, about championing climate action in the Global South. Like myself, Caribbean-based Derval is a resident of the Global South and she knows what I’m talking about when I say how those countries are the most vulnerable to effects of global warming that are already happening, and have been getting worse for decades.

Through insightful, carefully researched questions Derval asks me about my own journey and process through conservation and my recent switch to authoring educational graphic novels about climate change. We discuss how storytelling and edutainment can effectively break through barriers in awareness, understanding, empathy and action. As a parting message to Derval’s listeners, I share my belief that everyone can harness their special ability, passion, talent or interest to make this world a better place. I also promise to take my main comic book characters, Captain Polo the bear and his friend Penguin, to the Caribbean so they can try out the famous hot chili sauce…

I encourage teachers and parents to have a listen, and if they resonate with the show, maybe introduce it to the children they teach or parent. Kids today are facing increasing anxiety about climate change and the state of the natural world, and they need resources like this to gain knowledge and empowerment.
